"Human accomplishments result from the reciprocal influences of external circumstances, a host of personal determinants, including endowed potentialities, acquired competencies, reflective thought, and a high level of self initiative" noted social psychologist Albert Bandura
The Lab is directed by Dr. Bruce W. Tuckman, a professor in the College of Education, who came to Ohio State from Florida State University where he had done considerable research on techniques for helping college students improve their academic performance.
Dr. Tuckman's scholarly interest focuses on the topic of motivation: its manifestation in the form of self-regulatory behavior, and its absence in the form of procrastination, particularly as applied to the behavior of studying. Theoretically, he is building a model linking motivational factors to school achievement; in terms of application, he is examining specific interventions that enhance the self-regulatory behavior of students (e.g., goal setting, planning, incentives). He is also interested in study strategies that help students learn from text.
Dr. Tuckman presented a symposium paper at the 7th Workshop on Achievement and Task Motivation: An International conference on Motivation, Leuven, Belgium, May 2000. Click here to see the paper he presented.
Dr. Tuckman chaired a symposium at the 1999 American Psychological Association conference in Boston. Click here to see Dr. Tuckman's symposium paper.
